Bonobos Review - Must Read This Before Buying

Bonobos Review

Bonobos built its entire reputation on one insight that sounds obvious once you hear it. Most men's trousers are cut for a shape almost nobody actually has, either billowing at the seat or clinging at the thigh, and the industry solution was to shrug and let you deal with a tailor.

The company's answer was the curved waistband and a fit system that lets you pick between Tailored, Slim, Slim Taper, Athletic and Straight on the same pair of trousers. That approach turned the Stretch Washed Chino into one of the best-selling chinos in America and built a genuinely loyal customer base.

The brand has since expanded well beyond chinos into suits, dress shirts, golf wear and outerwear. Whether all of it lives up to the reputation the trousers built is a different question, and one recent independent test suggests the answer isn't a straight yes.

Bonobos Pros and Cons

Pros:

  1. Five fit options on core trousers, which genuinely solves the thigh and seat problem
  2. Strong customer ratings across the range, most bestsellers sit at 4 out of 5 or higher
  3. Free shipping and returns within the US
  4. Guideshop locations let you try before ordering
  5. Frequent sales bring the Chino 2.0 down to around $39 from $99

Cons:

  1. The Jetsetter suit is dry-clean only, which undercuts the travel positioning
  2. The $129 Jetsetter dress shirt is only semi wrinkle-resistant according to independent testing
  3. Rivals like Mizzen+Main and Bluffworks are machine washable at similar prices
  4. Icon Status colours are excluded from most promotions

The Chinos Are the Real Product

Bonobos

If you only ever buy one thing from Bonobos, this is it. The Stretch Washed Chino 2.0 uses four-way stretch fabric with wrinkle resistance, the signature curved waistband, contrast pocket liners and a zip pocket for keys and wallet. Sizes run 28 to 46.

The customer numbers back the reputation. On the brand's own site the Stretch Washed Chinos average 4.4 out of 5 from around 170 ratings, the Stretch Weekday Warrior Dress Pants sit at 4.4 from 465 ratings, and the Stretch Washed Chino Shorts hit 4.5 from 199 ratings. The Highland Golf Shorts do best of all at 4.8 from 144 ratings.

One reviewer at Yahoo who has tested a lot of chinos called these the best he'd ever worn, and specifically flagged the fit customisation as the reason. If you need more room in the seat or thigh, or a more tapered leg, you're picking that at checkout rather than paying a tailor afterwards.

Pricing lists around $99 but the Chino 2.0 regularly drops into the $39 to $79 range during sales, which changes the value equation considerably.

The Jetsetter Line Deserves Scrutiny

This is where an honest review has to slow down, because the marketing and the product don't fully line up.

A team at We Tried It bought and tested the Jetsetter line rather than reviewing from a press sample, and their conclusion was blunt. The suit is dry-clean only, which is a strange feature for a line named after travel. The $129 dress shirt they described as only semi wrinkle-resistant and semi comfortable.

Put against Mizzen+Main, they rated the Mizzen+Main as the more durable of the two. Their overall verdict was that Bonobos is an OK brand rather than a great one, with better options available at the same price or below from Bluffworks, Ministry of Supply and Mizzen+Main, all of which are machine washable.

Where they gave Bonobos the win was styling. The design and tailored cut looked sharper than the alternatives. So if you're buying for the look rather than for packing light, that's a reasonable trade. If you actually travel and want to avoid dry cleaners, the naming is misleading.

The Wider Range

Beyond trousers, the catalogue covers Jetsetter Stretch Dress Shirts customisable by neck size and sleeve length with a choice of collar and four fits, the Riviera Short Sleeve Shirt in over 30 prints, unconstructed Italian wool blazers averaging 4.4 out of 5 from 140 ratings, jeans at 4 out of 5 from 292 ratings, and a golf line that reviews particularly well.

The blazers and golf gear both hold up in customer feedback. The jeans are the weakest scoring category in the range at a flat 4 stars, which is worth knowing if denim is what brought you here.

Shipping and Return Policy

Bonobos Clothing

Bonobos offers free shipping and free returns within the US, which removes most of the risk from ordering online.

The standard window is 45 days from the purchase date for a full refund to your original payment method, provided items are unworn, unwashed and unaltered with tags intact. After that there's an unusually generous extension, you get a further 90 days beyond the 45-day window to return items in the same condition for store credit rather than a refund.

Returns can be made by post using a UPS label or in person at any Bonobos Guideshop, which is faster if you live near one. Online refunds typically take up to 14 business days to process, while in-store refunds are handled immediately.

A few exclusions to note. Gift cards can't be refunded or redeemed for cash. Used, washed or altered items are rejected. Gift returns require a separate gift return form, and a service agent responds within two business days with instructions, with the refund issued as store credit. Gift exchanges aren't offered at all, you return for credit and then buy the replacement.

Orders can't be cancelled once placed, though live chat may be able to intervene if you catch it quickly enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Bonobos chinos run true to size?

Generally yes, and the fit system helps considerably. Rather than guessing, you pick from Tailored, Slim, Slim Taper, Athletic or Straight in the same waist size, which solves most sizing complaints before they happen.

Is Bonobos worth the money?

For chinos and trousers, the ratings and repeat customers suggest yes, particularly on sale. The Jetsetter line is harder to recommend at full price given machine-washable rivals exist at similar cost.

Is the Bonobos Jetsetter suit machine washable?

No. It's dry-clean only, which independent testers flagged as a real weakness given the travel-focused branding.

What is Bonobos' return policy?

45 days for a full refund on unworn items, plus a further 90 days after that for store credit. Shipping and returns are free within the US.

Bonobos or Mizzen+Main?

Independent testing rated Mizzen+Main as more durable and it's machine washable. Bonobos wins on styling and tailored fit. Pick based on whether appearance or easy care matters more to you.

Final Verdict

Bonobos earns its reputation on trousers, and specifically on the fit system that lets you solve the seat and thigh problem without a tailor. The Chino 2.0 is the product everything else was built on top of, and the customer ratings across the trouser range back that up consistently.

The rest of the catalogue is more uneven. Blazers and golf wear review well, jeans sit at the bottom of the range, and the Jetsetter line has real gaps that independent testing exposed, particularly the dry-clean-only suit.

With free shipping, free returns and a 45-day window extending to 135 days for store credit, there's very little downside to trying a pair of chinos. Just watch the sales rather than paying full list, and think carefully before buying into the Jetsetter positioning at full price.
