Yoto Bluetooth Headphones Not Pairing? Here Is What to Check
Before you troubleshoot anything, check one thing: whether your Yoto has Bluetooth at all.
The Yoto Player 2nd Generation does not. Yoto says so directly, and gives the reason as an incompatible chipset. If that is your player, no amount of resetting, re-pairing or firmware updating will help, because the hardware cannot do it. You have a 3.5mm headphone port instead.
If you are on a generation that does support Bluetooth, the fixes below are all from Yoto's own documentation, and one of them is a genuinely overlooked first step.
Which Yoto models have Bluetooth
| Model | Bluetooth headphones | Notes |
| Yoto Player 2nd Gen | No | Yoto states this is due to an incompatible chipset |
| Yoto Player 3rd Gen | Yes | Two Bluetooth modes, headphones and speaker |
| Yoto Mini 2024 Edition | Yes | |
| Yoto Player 4th Gen | Yes, Bluetooth 6.1 | Shipping from 15 October 2026 |
| Yoto Mini 4th Gen | Yes, Bluetooth 6.1 | Shipped from 30 September 2026 |
All the older models have a 3.5mm headphone port for wired headphones, which is the reliable fallback while you sort Bluetooth out.
One honest gap: Yoto's support article names only the 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen and Mini. It does not say whether the 1st Gen Player has Bluetooth, so we are not going to assert it either way. If you have a 1st Gen, assume wired until Yoto confirms otherwise.
How pairing is supposed to work
Worth reading even if you think you know, because the right-hand button step is where most people go wrong.
1. Turn your headphones on and put them into pairing mode, close to the player
2. On the Yoto, press and hold the left orange button for around 3 seconds until the Bluetooth icon appears
3. Rotate the right-hand button clockwise to the headphone icon
4. Press the right-hand button to start pairing
5. The Bluetooth icon flashes blue while it searches
6. When paired, the icons turn full colour and a blue pixel appears at the top-left of the clock face
The step people miss is number 3. Models with two Bluetooth modes default to one or the other, and if you are on the speaker icon rather than the headphone icon, the player will never find your headphones no matter how many times you retry.
The other Bluetooth mode, for reference
Yoto players can also act as a Bluetooth speaker, taking audio from your phone. That is a different mode and a different setup:
In the Yoto app, open the player's Settings and turn on the Bluetooth Pairing switch under Advanced. Hold the left orange button for around 3 seconds until a grey Bluetooth icon appears. On dual-mode models, select the speaker icon with the right-hand button. Pair from your phone's Bluetooth settings, then short-press the right-hand button on the player. Play from your phone, and navigate from your phone rather than the player buttons. Exit by holding the left orange button for around 3 seconds.
Yoto says this process works the same on the Player and the Mini.
Fix 1: update the Yoto OS first
This is the step we would put ahead of everything else, and here is why it is evidence-backed rather than generic advice. Yoto's own release notes contain a run of Bluetooth fixes, several of them for exactly the symptoms people report.
| Version | Date | The Bluetooth entry, in Yoto's words |
| v2.22.4 | 4 Jun 2025 | Fixed issue where Yoto BT headphone minus and plus buttons do not skip track or chapters |
| v2.21.4 | 19 Feb 2025 | Volume limit now applies when changing volume from headphones. Fixed Pre/Next buttons from Bluetooth headphones |
| v2.17.5 | 8 Apr 2024 | Fixed Bluetooth related crash |
| v2.15.16 | 11 Mar 2024 | Fixed an issue with pairing Bluetooth headphones |
| v2.11.1 | 18 Jan 2023 | Bluetooth: fix enabling Bluetooth for the first time |
| v2.9.13 | 20 Oct 2022 | Prevent OS freeze with Bluetooth headphones |
| v2.8.6 | 17 Aug 2022 | Fixed issue with BT audio playing from speakers when headphones are connected |
Read that list and the pattern is obvious. Pairing failures, crashes, freezes and audio coming out of the wrong place have all been software bugs Yoto has fixed at various points. If your player is a few versions behind, your problem may already be solved.
To check your version: open the Yoto app, go to Account, and tap the Settings icon next to your player. Yoto does not publish how updates are installed or whether they happen automatically, which is a gap in its documentation, so if yours looks out of date it is worth asking support directly.
Fix 2: the documented failure modes

These are the ones Yoto actually publishes fixes for.
| Symptom | Yoto's fix |
| Headphones do not reconnect automatically | Press the left button and rotate the right button to the headphone icon to reconnect |
| Audio stutters | Disconnect the headphones first, then reconnect |
| Will not pair at all | Press your headphones' pairing button a second time and try again. Yoto says some headphones default to a different Bluetooth version |
| Pairs with the wrong headphones | The player connects to the strongest signal. Turn off or move away other Bluetooth devices |
| Headphone port silent with several different headphones | This is the hardware escalation point. Contact Yoto support |
That second-press trick is worth trying before anything drastic. Yoto's wording implies a Bluetooth version mismatch, and pressing the pairing button again often drops headphones into a more compatible mode. It takes two seconds and solves a surprising share of cases.
Fix 3: the volume limiter
Yoto has a separate Headphone Volume Limiter, and it says plainly that this feature can affect headphone output. Turning it off is one of its own troubleshooting steps.
To check it: Yoto app, Settings tab, open the player's settings. The player needs to be switched on and connected to the internet for settings changes to go through. Scroll down to the Headphone Volume Limiter.
The main volume limiter runs on a 0 to 16 scale, with Day and Night limits. Yoto's own note: the maximum volume is 16 and the lowest is 0, which results in no sound at all. So if you have a Night limit set low and you are testing in the evening, that alone can look like a pairing failure.
Does the limiter apply over Bluetooth? Yoto does not state it on the limiter page, but its release notes answer it. Version 2.21.4, from February 2025, says volume limit now applies when changing volume from headphones. So from that firmware onward, yes. No decibel figures are published.
Fix 4: the hard reset
If the player is unresponsive rather than just refusing to pair, Yoto documents a hard reset: hold the power button on the right side for at least 10 seconds, or until it restarts.
Importantly, this keeps your content and your WiFi connection. It is not a factory reset and you will not have to set the player up again.
What Yoto does not document, and we will not invent
Being honest about the limits here, because you will find sites confidently answering these with made-up steps.
- There is no published way to forget or clear a paired Bluetooth device on a Yoto. Both of Yoto's Bluetooth articles are silent on it
- There is no published limit on how many devices a Yoto can remember, so the too many saved devices theory has nothing behind it
- There is no documented fix for audio coming through only one earbud
- There is no documented fix for pairing succeeding but producing no sound
- There is no documented fix for volume being locked over Bluetooth, beyond the limiter settings above
- Yoto does not say whether Bluetooth pairing works with no WiFi connection
- Yoto publishes no figure for how much battery Bluetooth use costs
The closest things to a clear-everything action are the 10-second hard reset, which keeps your content, and toggling the Bluetooth Pairing switch off and on in the app. Neither is documented as a device-forgetting function, but they are what exists.
One documented community report worth knowing about
On Yoto's own community forum, an owner of two Yoto Minis reported that one would randomly disconnect from Bluetooth and freeze. A white smiley face would sometimes appear but the buttons were ignored, and only a long-press restart recovered it, after which the headphones had to be re-paired. It could happen within 10 minutes of playtime.
Details from that post: it happened with both Yoto's own headphones and a third-party pair, the headphones worked fine with an iPad, the problem started after adding a second player, a reset did not help, and running one player alone did not help. The firmware was listed as 2.11.2-2.
Two things to take from it. First, treat it as one documented community report, not a confirmed widespread fault. Second, note that firmware number. Yoto shipped an OS-freeze-with-Bluetooth-headphones fix back in v2.9.13 and a Bluetooth crash fix in v2.17.5, so a player sitting on 2.11.x is missing later fixes. Which brings you back to updating first.
Yoto's own headphones
If you are buying new headphones to solve this, Yoto sells its own at $33.74, on sale from $44.99.
| Spec | Detail |
| Range | 10m / 33ft |
| Battery | 20 hours listening, 400 hours standby, 2.5 hours to charge |
| Compatible with | Yoto Player 3rd Gen, Yoto Player 4th Gen, Yoto Mini 2024 Edition, Yoto Mini 4th Gen, and other Bluetooth audio devices |
Yoto does not publish the Bluetooth version on its own headphones, nor whether they are classic Bluetooth or Bluetooth LE. And there is no published list of incompatible third-party brands. Worth noting that in the forum report above, Yoto's own headphones failed too, which argues against a brand-specific explanation.
When it is a hardware fault, and what the warranty covers

Yoto's own escalation trigger is clear: if the headphone port is silent with several different headphones, or if the troubleshooting steps fail, contact support.
- Warranty covers defects within 24 months from the date of original purchase
- The remedy is repair or replacement, at Yoto's discretion
- It covers products used as intended and defective due to faulty materials or workmanship
- Contact is through the support centre at support.yotoplay.com, which has a chatbot, or the contact form on your regional Yoto site. No general phone number or email is published on the guarantee page
One thing to check yourself: Yoto's guarantee page has separate headings for 4th Generation products and everything else, which suggests the terms may differ. We could not read the differing text, so if you have a 4th Gen, check the specific section before relying on the 24 month figure.
A safety note if you own an older Yoto Mini
Not directly a pairing issue, but if you are troubleshooting an older Mini you should know this.
The original Yoto Mini, sold from November 2021 to April 2024 for around $70, was recalled. CPSC Recall 24-190, announced 11 April 2024: the lithium-ion battery can overheat and catch fire, posing burn and fire hazards. Around 251,165 units in the US and 18,932 in Canada.
The remedy was then upgraded. A reannouncement dated 12 December 2024, CPSC Recall 25-065, offers a free full battery replacement kit, and it is available even to owners who already received the smart charging cable from the first round. Updated incident count at that point was nine US reports and three UK reports of overheating or melting, with no injuries.
How to identify an affected unit
- Pale grey with orange tactile controls and a pixel display
- Model name Yoto Mini, SKU PRPLXX00860, serial number on the base
- Shipped with a charging cable but no adaptor
Contact for the recall: 844-370-0426, 9am to 5pm CT Monday to Friday, or minihelp@yotoplay.com, or yotoplay.com/recall.
CPSC also says to stop using it, keep it away from children, and dispose of the lithium-ion battery according to local rules, not in the trash or retail battery recycling boxes.
Check the SKU rather than assuming. This recall covers the pre-2024 Mini, not the Mini 2024 Edition or the Mini 4th Gen. And per Yoto's own documentation, the recalled Mini is not the Bluetooth-capable Mini generation, so most people with Bluetooth pairing problems are not on an affected unit.
FAQ
Why won't my Yoto connect to Bluetooth headphones?
First check your model actually supports it. The Yoto Player 2nd Gen does not have Bluetooth at all. If yours does, make sure you selected the headphone icon rather than the speaker icon with the right-hand button, update your Yoto OS, and try pressing your headphones' pairing button a second time.
Does the Yoto Player 2nd Gen have Bluetooth?
No. Yoto states it does not, due to an incompatible chipset. Use the 3.5mm headphone port with wired headphones instead.
How do I pair Bluetooth headphones to a Yoto?
Put the headphones in pairing mode nearby. Hold the left orange button for around 3 seconds until the Bluetooth icon appears. Rotate the right-hand button clockwise to the headphone icon, then press it. The icon flashes blue while searching, then the icons turn full colour and a blue pixel appears top-left when it connects.
How do I forget a paired device on a Yoto?
Yoto does not publish a way to do this, and does not state any limit on saved devices. The closest options are the 10-second hard reset, which keeps your content and WiFi, or toggling the Bluetooth Pairing switch in the app.
Why is my Yoto's Bluetooth volume so quiet?
Check the Headphone Volume Limiter in the app, which Yoto says can affect headphone output. Also check the Day and Night volume limits, which run 0 to 16. From firmware v2.21.4 onward the volume limit applies to volume changes made from headphones too.
My Yoto freezes when using Bluetooth headphones. What now?
Hard reset by holding the power button for at least 10 seconds, then update the Yoto OS. Yoto has shipped specific fixes for Bluetooth-related crashes and OS freezes in past versions, so an out-of-date player is the first thing to rule out.
Bottom line
Three checks solve most Yoto Bluetooth problems, in this order.
1. Confirm your model has Bluetooth. The 2nd Gen Player does not, and nothing will change that
2. Update the Yoto OS. Yoto's own release notes list fixes for pairing failures, Bluetooth crashes and OS freezes with headphones across several versions
3. Make sure you selected the headphone icon, not the speaker icon, with the right-hand button
After that, try pressing the headphones' pairing button a second time, turn off other nearby Bluetooth devices so the player does not grab the strongest signal, and check the Headphone Volume Limiter in the app.
If the headphone port is silent with several different pairs of headphones, stop troubleshooting. That is Yoto's own escalation trigger and it points at hardware. You have 24 months of warranty from purchase, so contact support rather than spending another evening on it.
